Start: Klais railway station car park - Destination: Mittenwald train station car park
The winter hike from Klais via the Krüner districts of Kranzbach and Elmau as well as the two excursion destinations of Ferchensee and Lautersee to Mittenwald, is a varied hike through forests covered in deep snow and the unique landscape of the Karwendel Alpine World.
.
This winter hike is not technically demanding, but it does cover about 14 kilometres and requires physical endurance. The tour starts at the Klaiser Bahnhof railway station. This can be reached by public transport and initially runs along the Elmauer Weg to the start of the winter hiking trail, which leads in the direction of Kranzbach and Elmau. Shortly after Kranzbach Castle, follow the trail through the "Drüsselgraben", which ends in front of Elmau Castle (1,008 m). In front of the castle grounds, past the hotel car park and continuing on the hiking trail along the Ferchenbach, hikers first reach the Ferchensee (1,060 m), where there is a stop for refreshments at the inn of the same name. Now the forest trail leads up to the Ferchenseehöhe (1,088 m) before descending to the Lautersee (1,013 m). To get back to Mittenwald from the Lautersee, either hike along the geological nature trail to the valley station of the Kranzberg chairlift and on to the village centre or follow the hiking trail through the Laintal, which leads directly to Mittenwald.
