The Isar reservoir is just a few minutes' walk from the center of Krün.
The body of water in the Bavarian Karwendel mountains is an artificial water reservoir and is used to generate energy. The dam was built in 1924, from where the water from the Isar is diverted into the Isar Canal to feed the Walchensee power station. The lake has a maximum length of around 2.5 km and is around 200 m wide. The deepest point of the reservoir is around 30 meters. The lake is surrounded by impressive mountain
scenery and is a popular destination for hikers and cyclists.
The reservoir is particularly well-known for its clear water and the tranquillity it exudes. It is home to a variety of animal species, including swans, which can usually be found here. The Isar reservoir offers a spectacular view of the Karwendel mountains, making it a popular photo opportunity. Swimming is not permitted for safety reasons, but there is a beautiful hiking trail
that can be followed in both winter
and summer
. The Isar Nature Adventure Trail leads from Krün along the Isar directly to the lake, and you will also find the entrance to the Hüttlebachklamm gorge in the immediate vicinity. Although the lake was created artificially, it is an absolute highlight for nature lovers.
